Eastern Phoebes and a Black Cat

I have a pair of Eastern Phoebes nesting in the eave of the shed. I will take this as a sign that parts of the compound are being integrated fully into the landscape. They picked a spot that drinks up the morning sun and is also within view of the house, so I can check up on them without approaching. They seem like pleasant little birds, but are being increasingly protective, so I suspect she is now incubating.

This morning a black cat was stalking birds where I sprinkle food. Rrrgh. There’s also a concern that the garden will attract bears. I’ll erect a solar electric fence for the bears. The cat, I’ll have to shoo off.

We’ve had a couple nights dipping below freezing that have kept me bringing plants inside and out. According to the weather forecast, tomorrow night will be the last frost for a while. So far, I have some cole crops, onions and strawberries planted. Of course, my asparagus is getting used to its new bed, too.

Odie harvested the abandoned potato patch yesterday, so I had taters for supper.

Today, I will continue moving the compost, which was unfortunately delivered down hill and 30 yards from its point of use, to the garden. It’s a good workout and my wheelbarrow skills are really cresting.
