Greener and greener! The garden is beginning to produce! I started most everything from seed, so it lags behind other gardens a bit, but the wait has been worth it! Here’s a tour of the garden earlier this summer when the potato plants were respecting their boundaries.
I’ve been regularly pulling salad greens and chard from the beds for several weeks. In this last week, green beans, cucumbers, peppers, radishes, strawberries, and many herbs have offered up a tasty harvest. I’ve also planted several varieties of hops and pawpaws. The garden is surrounded by sapling cherries and wild berry bushes. One of the pleasures of working in it is seeing the variety of birds hopping around singing and feeding.

The greenhouse is getting set up nicely, and I’m planting a bit in it for fall harvest. It is equipped with raised beds, and hangers for my Kratky hydroponic system.

With the garden chugging away, it’s time to look ahead a bit. I’ve started processing the firewood. This year, I got the wood from my neighbor, who cleared part of his lot for a lawn (no comment). My son has been helping out a bit with the hauling and splitting, and it’s always nice to see him. I’m nursing a bruised ego, as I absentmindedly dropped the 12-pound splitting maul on my foot without wearing proper footwear. The junco, who is nesting by the front door, has been very social and comes out to watch the activity. She’s a friendly little bird.

I am bouncing back from the Lyme disease and having more productive days. I caught up on sewing on a recent rainy day, have been organizing all the wildlife rehab supplies, filing seed packs away in an organizing file. Soon, I have a hunch, I’ll have the time to take the boat that I built last year out on the water.
