My Wren Friend

This Winter has been all about Juncos and Nuthatches. It’s a huge flock. There are a handful of chickadees and three doves that regularly partake in the peanuts and sunflower seeds. And one Carolina wren. The same little fellow. He’s not particularly shy around me, and like my buddy the chickadee, the wren often follows me around to check out what kind of trouble I’m causing.

If you haven’t spent much time watching a wren, please do when you get a chance. They flick their tail about in the most pert way, and are a cheery curious bird. And so this lovely russet singleton wren has managed all winter on his own, saddling up to the slate juncos and the tuxedoed nuthatches.

I have two clearly single birds. The wren, and the extra dove in the threesome. It’s often left out when the bonded pair saunter off to do lovey dovey business. During these times he’s often seen in the company of a certain Junco, but that’s another interspecies story.

This one is pretty simple. Mr. Carolina Wren thinks it’s spring. And while I was out trying to clear up some of the construction mess and firewood tarps, he sat by the compost heap and sang his heart out. I sure hope he finds a mate. He was giving it everything.

My Wren Friend, welcoming spring and looking for love.
