Winter

To celebrate the Solstice, managed a taste of Chartreuse, a liqueur made in an ancient French Monastery. Its flavor is derived from some 100+ herbs, and if anything can taste more like a distilled meadow, I’d be surprised!

There are currently big flakes of snow piling on top of everything, and the birds are taking continuous shifts at the feeder. I need to go down to the shop and fill some orders, everyone is out sick, except for one who is returning from being sick. COVID is terrible, what it does to the body, families, and how it has divided communities. The press is billing this as “The Dark Winter,” which although apt, won’t be nearly as dark as those millennia of winters our ancestors bore eeking out shelter and nourishment without technology and infrastructure.

Each Winter, I have taken on a novel project. Some years with more success than others. Last year, I built this boat and made a lot of progress on my house, too. My business, Seed-Balls.com was the result of a winter project.

My Wherry, which I built in the late winter/spring of 2020.

This year, my project is a little more nebulous, but I think it will be fruitful. I’m going to get back in the swing of making art based in nature. I’m getting my observational toolkit ready (microscope, telescope, sketchbooks), and have plans to build a substantial counter-weighted easel, for which I procured some nice clear local cherrywood.

Once my crew is healthy and back in the swing of things, and I’ll be able to get back to my preferred routine and make some cool things happen again.
